AIT attains status of International Intergovernmental Organization

A landmark in Thailand’s higher learning was reached when the Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Mr. Kasit Piromya signed the new Charter of the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, thereby initiating the process to grant it the status of an International organization. AIT becomes the first international organization in the field of higher learning in Thailand.

Signing the charter, the minister congratulated AIT and stated that “AIT is recognized as a center of excellence in research and knowledge in Southeast Asia.” The Foreign Minister stated that the Royal Thai Government fully endorses the new Charter and that the Charter will be open for signature for one year from today, and it will become effective when the fifth country deposits its instrument of ratification with the Royal Thai Government.

Today, 12 countries and one intergovernmental organization signed the new AIT Charter. They include People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Kingdom of Cambodia, Republic of India, Japan, Federal Democratic Republic of Nepal, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Republic of Philippines, Republic of Seychelles, Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka, Kingdom of Sweden, Kingdom of Thailand, Democratic Republic of Timor Leste and United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM).

Former minister of foreign affairs, H.E. Dr. Tej Bunnag, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of AIT, thanked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) and stated that the new Charter is the most significant development in the five decade long history of AIT. Dr. Tej, said the move is the fulfillment of the dream of the founding fathers of AIT, who had envisioned the creation of an international institute of higher learning in Asia.

Prof. Said Irandoust, President AIT thanked all partners for their continuous support and stated that AIT foresees itself playing a lead role in ensuring that Thailand emerges as a top destination for international students.

News of new AIT Charter was displayed prominently in the Breaking News section in The Nation newspaper. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) of the Royal Thai Government has also prominently featured the news on their website.

The Seminar Course: Work flow of O&G Exploration and Production operation in Vietnam

This course aims to give a better understanding of the practical side of the oil and gas exploration and production operations to the students. VPI and AIT to offer Professional Master's in Geoexploration and Petroleum Engineering

Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) to develop and offer a one year year Professional Master’s program in Geoexploration and Petroleum Engineering (GEPG). The MOU was signed by Prof. Said Irandoust, President, Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Dr. Phan Ngoc Trung, General Director of VPI on 15 June 2010.

The program will be offered at the premises of VPI in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The two institutes will provide international training, education and research to PetroVietnam and other interested parties. They will also participate in graduate education, short courses and training as well as joint research and will enhance collaboration in education and research in oil and gas exploration and production between the two institutes.

VPI is a research and development institute and a member of the Vietnam National Pil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam). It was founded in 1978 to carry out scientific and technologies studies application, basic surveys and scientific consultancies and training in the field of petroleum exploration, production, transportation, storage, distribution, processing, safety, environment, economics and management for Petrovietnam and other organizations related to petroleum industry in Vietnam and the region.

Delegates from VPI included Dr.Nguyen Hong Minh, Director of Science and Technology Strategy Division of VPI. Representatives from AIT included Dr. Nitin V. Afzulpurkar, Dean, School of Engineering and Technology (SET); Dr. Pham Huy Giao, SET; Ms. Tiamkare Thitithamtada, Program Officer, ERCO and Ms. Tripti Rajbhandari, Program Officer, SET.

PME-GEPG intake 2010

General Information

The Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) in collaboration with AIT Center in Vietnam (AIT-VN) offers the Professional Master Program in Geoexploreation & Petroleum Geoengineering (PME-GEPG) in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City for staffs, who are working in the oil and gas exploration and production industry, where the demands in highly-qualified HR of interntational standard are increasing. Students will be provided with the most neccesary and updated knowledge in geoexploration, reservoir engineering and management, production and drilling technology, projects and risk management for O&G industry.

The Professional master program in Geo-Exploration and Petroleum Geo-Engineering (PME-GEPG) of AIT has been offered beyond the Bangkok campus in cooperation with the AIT-Vietnam (AITVN) as an application-oriented and flexible program. The instructors are Professors from AIT, and other well-known universities and intitutes in the world as well as the oil and gas companies operating in Vietnam.


Program structure

AIT Professional Master Program is planned to complete in minimum one year. Students will take 33 credits, consisting of 24 credits of course work and 9 credits of research. In the first two semesters (8 months), the student will take courses equivalent to 24 credits. In the remained months student will carry out a research project equivalent to 9 credits.

  3. Decision Analysis and Risk Management for O&G Industry 3(3-0)
  4. Drilling and Well Completion Operation 3(3-0)

  7. Production Technology 3(3-0)
  8. Petroleum Geochemistry 3(3-0)
  9. Workflow in Oil and Gas E&P Operations in Vietnam (a seminar course)

The students need to spend about two weeks per month to attend two the classes as scheduled below:

The faculty are professors from Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and well-known universities in the world, i.e., Oklahoma (USA), Herriot-Watts (UK), Clausthal (Germany), ITC (Netherland), Kyoto (Japan), KIGAM (Korea), Chulalongkorn (Thailand), as well as experts from O&G companies operating in Vietnam. The Professional master program in GEPG at AITCV, HCM City had successfully started in August 2008, with the students from various oil and gas companies in Vietnam such as Cuu Long JOC, Hoan Vu JOC, Thang Long JOC, Lam Son JOC, Con Son JOC, Phu Quy POC, Truong Son JOC, Chevron, Nippon Oil, Salamander Energy, Pearl Oil, etc.

Entry requirement:

To be eligible for admission to the AIT Professional master's program, an applicant must:

  • Hold a Bachelor degree (normally from a four-year program), or its equivalent, in an appropriate field of study.
  • Have undergraduate grades significantly above average.
  • Have good command of English
  • At least three year of working experiences

English Entry Requirement: AIT is an international institute with English as the sole language of instruction. Admission to AIT requires proof of English language proficiency which may be satisfied in any of the following:

  • IELTS (4.5)
  • TOEFL (Paper -based: 500; Computer - Based:173; or Internet - based: 61)
  • AITEIT (4.5). Applicants can apply for English Test offered by AIT at AIT-VN. English Test fee: 20 USD.

English Training Program:
AIT-VN will conduct 7-week intensive English Training for those who need more English and Academic Skills before joining the program. The English Training Program also guide participants how to conduct AITEIT.

Admission schedule :

Intake: August

First Deadline for application (for those who needs English training): 30 May

First Entrance Test and Interview for admission to the Master Program: 2 - 13 June

Intensive English training: 15 June - 31 July

Second Deadline for application submission (for those who do not need more English training): 30 July

Second Entrance Test and Interview for admission to the Master Program: 1 - 6 August

Start of class: August/September


Fee & Scholarships:

Total tuition fee is $US 13,800 including fee for an international field trip. Tuition fee is paid for 3 installments as below:

  • 1st installment: Registration fee: 500 USD & Tuition fee: 350 USD X 12 credits = 4,200 USD
  • 2nd installment: Tution fee: 350 USD X 12 credits = 4,200 USD
  • 3rd installment: Tuition fee: 350 USD X 9 credits = 3,150 USD

International trip fee is $US 1,750 including air ticket (round trip), travelling, and accommodation. This fee can be used for the trips of students to AIT, Bangkok, Thailand for proposal defense and final exam of research study or a study trip to another country in the region.
